My
family has been involved in the theatre for many years but the influence
seemed to wane until me! My Gt Gt Grandfather and his son owned a string
of Music Halls around Lancashire and the north which were known as Grant's
Varieties. |

This is my Gt Gt Grandfather, Edmund Oliver Grant (Cleghorn) on stage. Among other skills he was a barrel dancer and comedian.

These are letters addressed to him at two of the theatres he owned in 1909. The top one is to Grant's Varieties at Skelmersdale. The bottom one is to Grant's Varieties in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

These two pictures
are of Edmund Oliver's son (my Gt Grandfather) Charles Henry Grant
(Cleghorn). He seemed to do both a comic turn and tragedy with
equal ease and it is possible that he may have tried being a stage magician
too. Sadly, neither my grandfather nor my father decided to follow in the family business and became distinguished in their own fields. I, on the other hand, was drawn to the stage from an early age. |
